Rubber yellowing is a manifestation of rubber aging, mainly caused by the following reasons:
- Aging reaction: During the use or storage of rubber, it is affected by the action of heat energy, light energy, radiation energy, as well as oxygen, ozone, water and variable metal, which leads to the breakage and cross-linking reaction of rubber molecular chains, and then causes aging, manifested as yellowing, hardening, brittleness and so on.
- Ultraviolet radiation: ultraviolet light can cause the cracking of carbon-carbon bonds or carbon-hydrogen bonds in the rubber molecular chain, resulting in a concentration of activity, leading to degradation of the molecular chain, resulting in yellowing.
- The role of heat and oxygen: over time, rubber materials will undergo oxidation reactions, and heat will accelerate this process, resulting in material discoloration.
- Rubber structure: There is a bond energy between polymer macromolecular chain bonds, and when the energy provided by the outside world is greater than the bond energy, the molecular chain is prone to activity concentration, leading to degradation and yellowing.
- Impurities and metal ions: If there are trace metals and impurities such as NO-3 in silicone rubber, it may cause yellowing after secondary vulcanization.
- Vulcanization process: silicone rubber in the vulcanization process, if the vulcanization temperature is too high or the time is too long, it will lead to the oxidation of the vinyl in the rubber compound, forming conjugated diolefin compounds, so that the silicone rubber turns yellow.
- Reaction container impurities: In the process of rubber reaction, the reaction container may introduce trace metal impurities, such as iron, chromium, etc., which may also lead to yellow silicone rubber.
- Rubber spray frosting: Compounding agents in rubber products, such as sulfur, accelerators, antioxidants, etc., if the amount exceeds the solubility in the rubber, it will migrate from the inside of the rubber to the surface and precipitate, resulting in frosting phenomenon, which may also cause yellowing.
- Rubber formulations: Certain additives used in rubber formulations, such as antioxidants, plasticizers, etc., may produce color changes during the aging process.

Application of Paraffin Wax
Because rubber aging is an inevitable change, rubber antioxidants are used in the production of rubber products to inhibit the aging of products and extend the service life of products. Rubber antioxidants are divided into physical and chemical antioxidants, and paraffin wax is commonly used as physical antioxidants. This passage mainly introduces how paraffin wax plays an anti-aging effect in rubber products and matters that should be paid attention to.
Paraffin is a white, odorless waxy solid, alkane structure, and it is a mixture of straight chain paraffin, branched paraffin and ring hydrocarbons. The commonly used paraffin wax in rubber is ordinary paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, rubber protective wax. Paraffin wax in rubber is a physical protective agent or softener, which can improve the anti-aging property of rubber and increase the flexibility of rubber. It does not participate in the reaction during vulcanization and is only dissolved in the rubber. When the vulcanization is cooled, it is in a supersaturated state and slowly migrates to the surface of the vulcanized rubber, forming a protective film that insulates against the erosion of oxygen and ozone in the air, thus playing a role in preventing aging.

The solubility of different varieties of paraffin wax in rubber is different, ordinary paraffin wax > rubber protective wax > microcrystalline wax. When the amount of paraffin exceeds its solubility, it will migrate to the rubber surface, but the amount is too much, the protective film is too thick, and it is easy to crack and fall off, but it affects the protective effect.

In the rubber products and tire industry, tackifying resins provide the necessary viscosity during the processing process, so rubber products and tire companies are more concerned about the performance of rubber products themselves. However, the study of its viscosification mechanism should also be paid enough attention.

The explanation mechanism can be divided into two aspects: on the one hand, the molecular adsorption and diffusion theory of rubber contact surface, and on the other hand, the formation theory of contact interface. The molecular adsorption and diffusion theory of rubber contact surface includes contact, adsorption, diffusion and other explanations, and finally unified as two-way adsorption and diffusion.
When two materials come into contact, the atoms and molecules in the material will interact with each other. These forces include strong forces such as chemical bonds, as well as weak forces such as hydrogen bonds and dispersion forces. In the case of materials, their viscosity is affected by dispersion, polarity and hydrogen bonding. In the case of rubber materials, polymers can be diffused and entangled upon contact, and through the diffusion of polymer molecules, the two surfaces are finally joined together. The diffusion and entanglement of polymers are closely related to their relative molecular mass. If the relative molecular mass is small, the diffusion is easy, but the entanglement is low. If the molecular weight is high, the diffusion is difficult, but the entanglement occurs and the strength after entanglement is better.
